The following Halloween party recipes are taken from a 1922 copy of:-

A thousand ways to please a family with Bettina's best recipes By Louise Bennett Weaver

Goblin Salads (Six)

Ingredients:-

*Six canned pears (halves)
*One-half cup mayonnaise
*Green peppers
*Almonds
*Pimientos
*Six pieces lettuce

Arrange the pears, rounded sides up, on the lettuce leaves. Spread the mayonnaise over the pears, covering them completely. Cut (with scissors) three-cornered pieces out of the green peppers to represent horns. Arrange these on the pears. Add the almonds for ears and cut the rest of the features from the pimientos (Use the scissors to cut circles for the eyes, three-cornered pieces for the noses, and little saw-toothed pieces for the mouths.)

Elf Salad (Six portions)

Ingredients:-

*Six round slices canned pineapple
*Six pieces lettuce
*Three-fourths cup mayonnaise
*Pimientos

Arrange the pineapple slices on the lettuce leaves. Spread the mayonnaise over the pineapple, entirely concealing it. Make features out of the pimientos and place on top of the slices of pineapple to represent faces. (Use the scissors to cut circles for the eyes, three-cornered pieces for the noses, and little saw-toothed pieces for the mouths.)

Witch Sandwiches (Fourteen)

Ingredients:-

*Fourteen thin slices white bread
*Fourteen thin Brown Bread
*One-third cup soft butter

Cut out the slices of bread with a round cutter. Spread the Brown Bread with the creamy butter. Cut out features from the white bread, using a sharp knife and a thimble. Carefully press the white circles onto the buttered brown bread. Arrange on a tray. The idea is to make a kind of silhouette out of the white bread and place it over the uncut (but round) brown bread.

Ghostly Messages

These are sandwiches made of graham bread, buttered very thin and rolled. Tie with narrow white ribbon and arrange in a basket. (Use very fresh bread, and remove the crusts after buttering. Wrap in a damp cloth until ready for use.) Basically the idea is they look like old fashioned rolled paper messages.
